My Silver Lining Cookbook

By Karen Jonson (Rishika)

What did I gain from my 14 years in the ashram of an evil cult? Well, I learned to cook delicious Indian food.

Curry and Cupcakes will share all my best recipes — and all my dishy stories of cooking in a dysfunctional ashram kitchen.

Add your name to the notify-me list — and I’ll let you know when Curry and Cupcakes is published. I’ll even send you a sneak peak!

When I left my ex-cult, I left with one silver lining — I had become an excellent cook of Indian food. I received so many compliments and requests for my recipes over the years that I decided to create this cookbook. What’s more, I experienced so many negative things in the cult, that I want to memorialize the positive aspect of my life there — learning to cook delicious Indian food from the beautiful Indian cooks from whom I learned to cook in the ashram kitchen.

Once a week, I had to whip up a meal for 50 to 500 people! There was no time for complicated steps. I have simplified the often-complex process of making delicious Indian food. I created recipes that minimize effort, while maximizing flavor.

Curry and Cupcakes — My Silver Lining Cookbook contains recipes I created, tested, and improved over the years — delighting hundreds of residents and guests with vegetarian meals, like peas and paneer, a variety of dals, and curries, and my many sweets, like my famous egg-less cheesecake.

Both Indian guests and ashram residents loved my cooking — often rushing to the community dining hall at mealtime when I was in the kitchen! I can’t wait to share my recipes and delicious dishes with you — so you can delight your family and friends with vegetarian Indian meals that they’ll love.

Here are just a few of the recipes I share in Curry and Cupcakes — My Silver Lining Cookbook:

  • Peas and paneer
  • Sumptuous Toor Dal
  • Spicy Toor Dal
  • Coconut Veggie Curry
  • Veggie Curry with Paneer
  • Savory Indian Veggie Patties
  • Carrot and Peanut Salad
  • Tasty Stir-Fried Chickpeas
  • Devi-Fried Rice
  • Delightful Zucchini Cupcakes (no eggs!)
  • Out-of-this-World Peach Cobbler
